I can't otherwise understand how else this comedy -- the trailer for which we've included after the jump -- has gotten off the ground.

See, it's about a pair of high school football players (played by 31-year-old Eric Christian Olsen and 28-year-old Nicholas D'Agosto) who opt out on their team training in order to tag along with the all-female cheerleading squad to their cheer camp/competition. Besides, with 300 ready-and-waiting young women at their alleged disposal, what are the odds that one of our guys will instead want to hook up with the cutie (Sarah Roemer) calling their bluff? And what chance could there possibly be that she already has a dick-ish boyfriend who can't help but make them look like more sensible guys in comparison? Might hilarity ensue?!
Continue reading 'Fired Up' Trailer Leaves Us Anything But

Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Adventureland' Trailer (or Kristen Stewart Stars in a Film Not Called 'Twilight')

Filed under: Comedy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

I bet you were sitting around today wondering what the director of Superbad was up to, right? That was you, right? Well, good news is Greg Mottola has been finishing up a new film called Adventureland, and based on this hilarious new trailer (which just premiered over at Rotten Tomatoes), it's got an '80s Dazed and Confused vibe written all over it ... and me likey Dazed and Confused very much.

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig (the new comedic love of my life), Ryan Reynolds and Kristen Stewart (OMG, what's Bella doing in another film?!), Adventureland takes place in 1987and follows an awkward kid straight out of school who takes a gig at an amusement park, falls in love, meets a bunch of maniacs and walks away with some pretty valuable life lessons. I had the pleasure of conversing with Jesse Eisenberg earlier this week during the NY premiere of The Living Wake (one of the funniest films of this year, no doubt) at the Big Apple Film Festival, and he's a very cool dude ... AND a big fan of Cinematical, no less. Check out the trailer below; I'm really looking forward to this one. I vividly recall the press screening, where every seat in the fest's largest theater was occupied by eager journalists, many of whom had sworn they'd miss whatever other films they had to as long as they could see this one.

It paid off, too -- the acclaim for the film was nearly universal. (Read Cinematical's James Rocchi's rave review here.) Now, in advance of the film's limited release on Dec. 31 (just in time to qualify for Rourke's inevitable Oscar nomination), Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer. Variety has it, and we've got it here, at the end of this post.

The trailer is good in the sense that it accurately conveys the tone of the film: moody, reflective, and only partially set in the wrestling ring. Bruce Springsteen's theme song is a nice touch. We get a few glimpses of Marisa Tomei, who plays Rourke's stripper friend (you'll catch more than a glimpse of her in the movie itself, if you know what I mean), and Evan Rachel Wood as Rourke's estranged daughter. Their performances are terrific, too, as is Aronofsky's direction -- man, I really hope this gets the Oscar attention that everyone thinks it will. It deserves it.

What do you think of the trailer? Does it make you more or less interested in the film? Let us know in the comments.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Eric D. Based on the popular Japanese manga and television series, this computer-animated 3-D version of Astro Boy is being produced by those wizards over at Imagi Animation Studios, and stars the voices of Freddy Highmore, Kristen Bell, Nicolas Cage, Bill Nighy, Donald Sutherland, Nathan Lane and Eugene Levy.

From the synopsis: "Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers. Powered by pure positive "blue" energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly-not to mention the purest spirit on the planet. Embarking on a journey across the planet to discover his powers, Astro Boy encounters a netherworld of robot gladiators and other comic characters, and learns the joys and emotions of being human. We're not sure whether the boys intentionally made sure this episode aired the week Twilight was to arrive in theaters or if they just got lucky, but it was all pretty funny nonetheless. And while they didn't reference Twilight (the one thing the episode was missing)*, they did take a few jabs at Hot Topic and the difference between goth kids and vampire kids. In the episode, the character Butters mistakes some vampire-themed kids at school for real vampires, and when his friends and parents all reject him, he turns to this new group for acceptance. Check out the scene below which shows Butters' transformation into a vampire, and you can catch the rest of the episode over at South Park Studios.

*Yes, they do reference Twilight once early on. I now feel like one of the wimpiest women on Earth. An awesome, new, full-length trailer for Coraline has popped up online. You can see it above, or head over to Yahoo to see it crisp, bigger, and HD (which is so totally worth it). Anyway, why do I feel so wimpy?

After starting out just like an episode of Pushing Daisies, the trailer shows the cute blue-headed girl named Coraline walking into a bathroom, getting annoyed by a frickin' colony of millipede-like things (large silverfish, seamonkeys?!) and ... crushes them with her hand. The things are the size of her pinky. I once called for mallet reinforcements when I found a slithering millipede the size of my pinkie. Her hand work is very impressive (and gory -- they do show the gelled remains smushed against the tiles ... yum!). I think she just might be the toughest kid, or woman, to grace the movies. At the very least, she could out-tough Willie Scott with both arms tied behind her back!

If Coraline is right up your alley (and it should, because the film looks amazing), head through the jump for some featurettes about the girl who finds herself in the land of button-eyes.

[via Ace Showbiz]
Continue reading New 'Coraline' Trailer Hits the Net

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Punisher is Like a Tank

Filed under: Action, Thrillers, Lionsgate Films, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

It's the middle of the work week, and I think you need some violence to carry you through the rest. Yahoo! Movies has a new behind-the-scenes clip from Punisher: War Zone, which you can access by clicking the link or the scope of Frank Castle's gun. It's short, but sweet, with some peeks at the glorious violence that will make this a real Christmas treat, at least in my warped out world. There's not much new footage, but you get to hear from Ray Stevenson, Dominic West, Julie Benz, the controversy magnet Lexi Alexander, and producer Gale Anne Hurd.

The best part? Hearing Stevenson's real Northern accent. I wish we had gotten a few more videos like these, Zack Snyder style, showing off the Punisher's hardware or something. My fondness for Stevenson has been well documented here, so you will sneer at that wish, but they really needed to sell their new Frank Castle. I'm convinced he's the perfect guy for the part, I just hope the film lets him prove it. If nothing else, at least we get to see someone killed by chair leg. I know that scene alone is going to be responsible for 95% of the tickets sold.

For example, did you know that Robert Pattinson is a bad kisser with bad dandruff? I guess he was telling the truth in that Unscripted about always telling everyone everything.

But this isn't about Pattinson's real-life woes. I wanted to discuss teen girls, love, and vampires. I must admit, it goes together. I read just about every vampire romance I found when I was a teen. But at the same time, girls were staking the vamps back then. Or at least Buffy was, long before she went soft for the hottie known as Angel.

Above is the classic Paul Reubens death scene from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Now he's no Edward Cullen, so I imagine it's a lot easier to stake the vamp when he's not sexy. If only the ultimate force that created vamps knew -- the way to really make them invincible is to make them tall, dark, and handsome.

Will you run out to bask in the Twilight this week, or go for something more old-school, like Buffy or THE vamp, Dracula?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Watch This: Original Ending for 'Little Shop of Horrors'

Filed under: Comedy, Horror, Music & Musicals, Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Remakes and Sequels, Trailers and Clips

As any hardcore Little Shop of Horrors fan can tell you -- and there are tons of us -- the 1986 cinematic version once had a much darker ending ... one that was much more in line with the dual source material of this musical and this Corman flick. But since this was 1986 and Frank Oz's movie had a lot of funny people in it ... a few test audiences deemed the finale too dark, and so we got a so-so ending tacked on to an otherwise excellent musical comedy.

When Warner Bros. first released Little Shop of Horrors on DVD, the original ending was included as part of the special features -- but that release was recalled right quick, which means that most of us actually own this particular DVD. But now, through the magic of YouTube + Cinematical, we can finally sit down and pick through the original ending of Little Shop. Obviously it's not "final print" material in any way, but you can definitely get enough to make you wish, oh I dunno, that someone would toss some money at the flick and let Frank Oz re-create a director's cut.

So if you own the "original" WB DVD, well goody for you. The rest of us can watch the fascinating footage right after the jump...
Continue reading Watch This: Original Ending for 'Little Shop of Horrors'

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Watch This: 'Star Trek' Meets 'Beverly Hills 90210'

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Trailers and Clips

The latest Star Trek trailer has only been floating around for a few days online (24 hours for the official version), and it sure didn't take long to find a spoof-ish video up on YouTube. The production qualities aren't very strong, but I couldn't help and chuckle throughout this new (and improved?) trailer that uses the theme song from Beverly Hills 90210 against re-edited footage from Star Trek. The result? A group of hot young guys and gals from the future who like to play with big weapons and sexy lingerie. Yowsers!

They do make a point to stop and run the bit where Uhura takes off her shirt over and over again alongside the exclamation: "Boobs in Star Trek" -- and I can't figure out whether that's a bad thing. Is it a bad thing? Or are some Trekkers so withdrawn from sexual activity that it scares them to see partial nudity tossed around the Enterprise. I don't get it. Didn't Kirk have sex all the time back in the day with a number of different females? Why are fans so outraged at the thought of a little kinky foreplay in this version of Star Trek? These kids are young, strong, hot and all cooped up on this ship in outer space -- what else do you expect them to do? Make fun of Chekov's accent?

Where was I? Oh yeah ... check out the video below.

[Thanks Dave]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Watch This: 'Super Powers'

Filed under: Comedy, Shorts, Fandom, Trailers and Clips

This is kind of an old short, but it's one I stumbled across the other day for the first time and absolutely loved. Super Powers, directed by John Mitchell and Jeremy Kipp Walker, tells of a young married couple who turn to dressing up as super heroes (specifically Batman and Wonder Woman) to spice up life in the bedroom. However, when a situation forces them out of their apartment and onto the streets, these two may just wind up saving a lot more than their sex life. Super Powers won Best Narrative Short Film at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival, and trust me when I say watching this short will totally make your Monday. Thankfully, Paramount has finally debuted that sucker online in glorious HD, and you can check it out over on Apple right now. Go ahead ... we'll wait here.

Since I've never been a hardcore Trek fan (or Trekkie, or Trekker, or TrekWTF), I can't pinpoint all the little things this trailer either gets right or wrong regarding the Trek mythology. I will say, though, that it looks to have all the makings of a big, exciting summer blockbuster and I'm sure audiences will devour it come May. Later on this evening, Cinematical will be joining Trek director J.J. Abrams for a very special presentation of footage from the new film, so we'll definitely be back to let you know how it looks, feels, sounds, etc ... And if there's anything specific you'd like us to try to ask Abrams, let us know in the comments.

In the meantime, feel free to sound off on the new trailer below. Is this what you expected? Okay, this one -- Race to Witch Mountain, a remake of Disney's own Escape to Witch Mountain from 1975 -- seems a fair bit more tolerable than that one was, as cab driver Johnson is forced to team up with UFO expert Carla Gugino on an unexpected mission to get two unique children (AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig) to the above-mentioned location of their spaceship.

A couple of things should be said for the trailer, which we've included after the jump.

There is an unavoidable watermark on it, but other than that, it seems to be a fully digital trailer and not bootlegged from sneaks of Bolt this past Saturday. (Okay, I get it: Star Trek is Star Trek... and you know who else pulls a very similar 'letting a vehicle crumple around you' trick? Bolt does.)

Said watermark and the YouTube premiere suggests that this hasn't been officially released by the studio yet, so I'd be willing to bet that this trailer gets taken down by the end of the day. Good luck!

More power to Johnson for throwing himself wholly into work like this, even if we can already see his character growing out of skepticism and towards accountability over the course of these two minutes. (Besides, Brendan Fraser can't hold a monopoly on all the family adventure hero roles.)

With that said, thanks to Roger Moore of the Orlando Sentinel for digging this up, and onto the trailer! Race to Witch Mountain opens next March.
Continue reading The Rock Races to 'Witch Mountain' in New Trailer

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Quietly Impressive New Trailer for 'Revolutionary Road'

Filed under: Drama, Awards, Movie Marketing, Oscar Watch, Paramount Vantage, Trailers and Clips

In a week littered with plenty of big-budget trailers piggy-backing on James Bond's undeniable popularity (Quantum of Solace just had the biggest opening day of any Bond film to date), the new one for Sam Mendes' domestic drama Revolutionary Road very nearly slipped through the cracks (thanks to Rob for passing it on, and Variety's Anne Thompson for premiering it).

This trailer plays more like a teaser than its predecessor, and yet it's a simple and short way to lure one into the suburban woes of stars Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio. The very slightest rumbles and mumbles of its worthiness as an awards contender this season are beginning to issue from the earliest guild screenings, and I suspect that the weeks to come will only bring more buzz before the film bows in limited release the day after Christmas -- the same strategy that Paramount Vantage employed last year with a little film they like to call There Will Be Blood. The brand new full-length trailer for Star Trek debuted in front of Quantum of Solace this weekend, and since Paramount wanted to wait until Monday to bring it online, a whole host of folks have recorded it inside the theater and posted the trailer to YouTube. I'm sure the studio will make sure these trailers are removed from YouTube shortly, so either get your good look in now or wait until Monday, when the trailer will arrive via the film's official website.

Based on what we see here, though, the flick definitely looks enticing. My favorite part wasn't the opening with young Kirk or the ridiculous-looking action sequences, but when Simon Pegg (as Scotty) says something like, "I like this ship - it's exciting!" We get a little dialogue from the new Spock and Kirk, so I'm curious to hear what you fans think of the new look and sounds of Star Trek? Of course we'll have a more thorough discussion when a better version of this trailer hits on Monday, but feel free to throw in your two cents below.

Star Trek hits theaters on May 8, 2009.

Gallery: Star Trek

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Discuss: What Do You Think of the New Harry Potter Trailer?

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, New Releases, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Family Films, Harry Potter, Trailers and Clips

That's the new two-minute trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince below, which Warner Bros. is hoping will help stave off death threats from fans who are still resentful that the film was pushed back to next July from its original release date of next week. (Just think! If it weren't for that, you'd be seeing the film less than seven days from now!) We featured it earlier today in Trailer Park, but come on -- a Harry Potter trailer deserves special attention.

One thing that's notable is that there is no reference, not even a hint, to the Big Surprising Terrible Thing that occurs near the end of the book and that presumably also occurs in the movie. (Although it would be funny if it didn't happen in the movie. "Oh, yeah, So-and-So's death? Eh, we cut it. No room. Maybe in the next film.") It's not exactly a well-kept secret anymore -- hard to do that when the book has sold 65 million copies -- but I appreciate that the trailer keeps a lid on it for those who watch the movies but don't read the books.

For those who have read the book, though, the trailer has glimpses of things that surely relate to the Big Surprising Terrible Thing: a shot of Draco Malfoy looking panicked and sickly, a shot of Snape firing his wand, etc. The scenes of Death Eater attacks on London look great, and I hope the film makes full use of how scary that aspect of the story is. (Magical people fighting each other, meh. Magical people fighting each other and harming innocent bystanders, yikes!)
Continue reading Discuss: What Do You Think of the New Harry Potter Trailer?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Eric D. We talked a bunch about it during Comic Con, and praised the film's oh-so-beautiful stars for getting out on the Con floor and plugging their flick for hours like seasoned champs. Well, they just released a brand new trailer for this dirty little slice of sexed-up awesomeness, and because it's a tad racy, foul-mouthed and erotic, you can check it out after the jump.

Inspired by films like Dragstrip Girls, Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill and Kung Fu Nun, Bitch Slap is described as "a post-modern, thinking man's throwback to the "B" Movie/Exploitation films of the 1950's - 70's as well as a loving, sly parody of the same," and it stars folks like Kevin Sorbo, Michael Hurst, Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor, as well as Julia Voth, America Olivo and Erin Cummings. Additionally, the very cool Zoe Bell (Kill Bill 1 & 2, Grindhouse) did all the stunt work on the film. Feel free to scope out two sweet galleries below, then view the trailer after the jump.
The film will arrive early next year.

Gallery: Bitch Slap

Gallery: SDCC: Hi-Res Bitch Slap Posters

</br.>
Continue reading Sex Sells: New 'Bitch Slap' Trailer is a Riot

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Trailer Park: Harry Potter, Armageddon and Pixar

Filed under: Fandom, Trailer Trash, Movie Marketing, Trailers and Clips

Potter and Pixar magic, a new Watchmen trailer and Roland Emmerich courts the apocalypse once again. Here's what's happening in trailers:

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Not to be outdone by those vampires over in Twilight land, Warner Bros. has released a brand new, full-length trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which, of course, should satisfy those Potter fanatics who were pissed the release date was pushed back from next week to this July. Check it out below:

2012
If Roland Emmerich hadn't chosen the career of film maker, I suspect he would have become a super villain as this film marks his third attempt to destroy the world (after Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow) -- and fourth if you count Godzilla, though the big lizard confined the devastation to New York City. Evidence as to what can happen when a dripping faucet gets out of control, this teaser looks pretty darn spectacular. Whether or not the film has any soul to back up the effects remains to be seen, but it opens on July 10.

Up
This preview spends a fair amount of time reminding us of all the hits Pixar has had before giving us a glimpse of this newest effort. We meet Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner), a grumpy old man who devises a unique plan for dealing with urban sprawl that's encroaching upon his home. Still just a teaser here, so story info is light, but I'm betting Pixar has another winner on its hands when the flick arrives in theaters on May 29, 2009.

Continue reading Trailer Park: Harry Potter, Armageddon and Pixar

Permalink | Email this | Comments

First Video from Disney's 'Prince of Persia'!

Filed under: Action, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fandom, Movie Marketing, Games and Game Movies, Trailers and Clips

Pictured: Our first look at Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton in Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

The first behind-the-scenes video from the set of Disney's Prince of Persia has made its way online, courtesy of Entertainment Tonight, and in it you'll get to see a glimpse of the sets in London at Pinewood Studios (where they're still shooting for about another couple of weeks), as well as a taste of what was done in Morocco and a quick chat with the Prince himself, Jake Gyllenhaal. But don't let Jake's regular old American accent fool you -- the dude has taken on a whole new accent for Persia, but you'll have to wait a little while longer before we're allowed to share the type of accent it is.

Cinematical was lucky enough to visit the set of Prince of Persia earlier this month, and while we can't really go into details, we have no problem placing a bet now that Persia will go down as the most successful (in terms of quality and box office numbers) video game adaptation of all time. This sucker is a monster, and you have my word that it looks damn good.
