Will you be watching? And did you know the very super awesome Hofstra University was hosting it (and I'm not just saying that because I went there or anything). Over on Fark, they're hosting a pretty hilarious photoshop contest in which folks are taking existing movie posters and re-tooling them to include John McCain and Barack Obama. One of my favorites has to go to the above poster for Dude, Where's My Car -- and if you look closely at those girls in the background, you'll notice a familiar face (and so what if I've been crushin' on the gal -- she's purty and stuff). Very funny nonpartisan humor.

Check out a group of these posters in the gallery below (the first one is nutty and freaky), then tell us your favorites. Additionally, feel free to send us your own creations and we'll post them at a later date. Get creative people!
The man has worked his way up the ranks, became a superstar, and still manages to be loved and admired. But me, I'm not a fan because of his recent stints in films like the Ocean series, nor for his Batman, nor his sexy stint on ER. I'm a die-hard fan of the old Clooney days, where he sported a mullet and popped up in television shows like The Facts of Life and awesome flicks like Return of the Killer Tomatoes.

Seeing the above pictures, which are peeks of Clooney while shooting his new movie Men Who Stare at Goats (courtesy of Just Jared and The Bad and the Ugly), I couldn't help but think back to how the heartthrob has changed over the years, morphing from awkward kid to handsome leading man. So, I'm going to go backwards.

Consider the above number one, and then head through the jump to watch him become a sexy, bespeckled youngin' in six steps.
Continue reading Cinematical Seven: The Many Looks of George Clooney

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stuff and Things: October 13th, 2008

Filed under: Action, Comedy, Drama, Fandom, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Politics, Images

Here's a round-up of some stuff (and things) currently causing waves online:

-- Moviefone has launched the latest installment of Unscripted, featuring stars Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Banks discussing their new film W. using reader questions and some of their own. Additionally, above you'll find some newly-released art for the film. Heh.

-- After breaking up with Paramount, Dreamworks has officially found a new f*ck buddy in Universal, so says Variety. The two signed a seven-year worldwide distribution deal.

-- Darren Aronofsky's The Fighter looks to be in trouble. Now that the writer-director is working hard on that Robocop remake, seems this other flick is being neglected. Brad Pitt has apparently dropped out, and Mark Wahlberg -- who's been training for the role for over a year -- doesn't seem to know the film's current status. All that being said, Slashfilm claims their scouting locations in Mass.

-- A few photos of Mel Gibson on the set of Edge of Darkness have appeared online, most of which show the man going full-Diddy, forcing some woman to hold an umbrella so the sun doesn't, ya know, shine on the poor man.
The Sherlock Holmes photos appearing online are almost disappointingly fast, aren't they? JustJared already has a second set up -- this time, we get a glimpse of Jude Law as Dr. Watson ... and well, he looks like Law in a mustache. I was hoping for a frock coat, at least! But what's more interesting is the second look at Robert Downey Jr. in costume as the great detective. He's considerably more polished this time around, which suggests several of our commentors were correct, and we may have glimpsed Holmes disguised as a member of the lower class. With the rate these photos are pouring in, we may see Rachel McAdams in full corset soon -- and the costume geek in me can't wait to see what she's wearing as Irene Adler.

With Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes kicking off in London this week, it wasn't going to be long before we got a glimpse of Robert Downey Jr. in Victorian costume. And a bunch have popped up on JustJared, accompanied by some bedraggled extras.

But did we expect him to look like this? Most people see Holmes in securely buttoned down tweed, complete with deerstalker cap and pipe. But that image was invented by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's illustrator, Sidney Paget. His description on the page was a bit different: "His very person and appearance were such as to strike the most casual observer. In height he was rather over six feet, and so excessively lean that he seemed to be considerably taller. His eyes were sharp and piercing, save during those intervals of torpor to which I have alluded; and his thin, hawk-like nose gave his whole expression an air of alertness and decision. His chin, too, had the prominence and squareness which mark the man of determination. His hands were invariable blotted with ink and stained with chemicals, yet he was possessed of extraordinary delicacy of touch, as I frequently had occasion to observe when I watched him manipulating the fragile philosophical instruments." He was also frequently described as "Bohemian" and would slip into a lethargic lifestyle between cases.

So there you go -- lethargic, with a carelessness hand hygeine. Ritchie will probably get flak for "reimagining" the character, but Holmes was never a put together fellow. How many cocaine and morphine addicts do you know who are, anyway? (Yeah, I know that's been cut from this PG version, but I wouldn't be surprised if it pops up in the way they're tackling the character in production.)

In the grand stick-figure tradition of Zack and Miri Make a Porno, and via FilmoFilia, comes the first one sheet for The Ugly Truth, the upcoming romantic-comedy starring Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler. Mr. Butler, if you were looking for a sign that you've hit the big-time, look no further than this! Your face is nowhere to be seen. They went on sheer name recognition, and cleverly alluded to your kilt-zone. (Then again, they could be suggesting that all women remember of you in 300 is your moonlit ass. Let's hope not, though.)

Despite that it's playing on an old stereotype, I think this is a pretty cute poster. It's so much better than the Photoshopped sunshine-and-smiles posters romantic comedies usually go with -- and while we're bound to get one eventually, I like that they've started out on an original footing; it makes me think this might just be the Doris Day / Rock Hudson sex comedy they're selling it as.

[Thanks to Holly of the Gerard Butler GALS for sending this my way. I heart you guys, but not with either of the zones featured in the poster. My actual heart.]

Well, yesterday Cinematical reader Jeff pointed out that Sillof had finished a Return of the Jedi line of figures, and, well, as you can see they're pretty damn cool. Above you'll find figures for Jabba the Hutt, slave Princess Leia, Salacious Crumb and Bib Fortuna. (Is it just me, or does this Jabba look straight out of a Guillermo del Toro flick?) Other characters in this set include an Ewok (who kinda looks like a smaller Wookiee -- which is funny since, originally, the forest full of Ewoks was supposed to be full of Wookiees), the Emperor, Imperial guards, Admiral Ackbar and a pimped-out Luke Skywalker. Check out a few images, along with other Steampunk Star Wars figures and drawings, in the gallery below.

Gallery: Steampunk Star Wars

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Exclusive: 'A Christmas Tale' Poster Premiere

Filed under: Drama, Foreign Language, Movie Marketing, Images, Posters

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for A Christmas Tale, directed by Arnaud Desplechin. The emotional French drama centers on a family who, throughout the years, struggle to come to terms with a personal tragedy that changed their lives forever. Reviewing the film from this year's Cannes Film Festival, Kim called it a "tragically comic tale of love, death, and familial strife and forgiveness."

Starring Mathieu Amalric, Catherine Deneuve, Anne Consigny and Jean-Paul Rossillon, this French flick has received nothing but good buzz since debuting a few months back. Toward the end of her review, Kim adds "I hope the film will secure distribution in the United States as well, so that American audiences might also get to appreciate its humor, beauty and depth."

Well, good news is IFC picked up A Christmas Tale and it will arrive in select theaters and On Demand on November 14, before expanding to other cities.
Our friends over on Quiet Earth snagged a bunch of behind-the-scenes photos from The Road, the much- anticipated adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer-winning novel. They came courtesy of actor Jeremy Ambler, the nice looking fellow to Viggo Mortensen's left. Everyone in the photographs may be smiling (I've never seen cannibal victims look so cheerful!), but I'll be darned if the photo of the Fanker Mansion doesn't send a chill down my spine. We've attached it and a photo of the cannibals in the gallery below -- pretty freaky looks for a very scary scene.

I can't decide if I'm excited for this movie or just plain dreading it. Every glimpse of it makes me go find a puppy and hug it, then watch some YouTube videos of baby pandas for good measure. Get Cute Overload and your Disney DVD's prepped on November 26th -- you're really going to need them.

I dig the Skywalker poster and all, but I'm waiting for these bumper stickers (also courtesy of Friedman) to hit my local online shop ...

[via Super Punch]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Geek Daily: Wolverine, 'Batman 3', 'Punisher' and 'Kick-Ass'

Filed under: Action, Independent, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Lionsgate Films, Warner Brothers, Fandom, 20th Century Fox, Newsstand, Movie Marketing, Comic/Superhero/Geek, Remakes and Sequels, Images, Trailers and Clips, Posters
There's actually a lot of noteworthy geek news today -- but alas, none of it is amazing enough to really warrant an entire post. Believe me, it makes me a sad panda not getting to devote an entire post to Wolverine. So, let's just get right down to it:

Producer Lauren Shuler Donner talked up X-Men Origins: Wolverine over on Superhero Hype: "It's closer to the first X-Men in tone because it's a little darker, but there's a lot of action. It's his origin story. It's really good. I've been in the editing room the last couple of weeks and I think that it's good and that audiences are going to like it. But it's a little darker ... You haven't seen this side of him. It's darker and sadder and it's kick-ass. There's a ton of action. It's really kick-ass." She also suggested the film borrows from Wolverine's Victorian youth in one of my least favorite series, Wolverine: Origins.

The troubled Punisher: War Zone has launched its official site, and it's got all kinds of things to click on. The multiplayer game jammed up my computer so I don't know what that's all about. And IGN has the new poster, which will arrive in your local theaters framed in "real" guns. I must say, that is a pretty impressive piece of marketing.

David S. Goyer, scribe of The Dark Knight, tried his best to end all these Batman 3 rumors. "It's all B.S.," he told MTV News. "ALL of it. Chris and I haven't even talked about it. He quite understandably is taking a long, long vacation and wants to purge himself." This will dampen the "Guess who's playing Catwoman" rumors for approximately 3.5 days.

Superhero Hype has 5 videos of Kick-Ass filming in Toronto. Mostly people standing around, and cars being driven on platform trucks. And /film has photos up of Dave "Kick Ass" Lizewski's costume, filled out nicely by his stunt double.

Never have I experienced so many different emotions while watching a film, and when I left that tiny theater in Utah following the premiere, I vowed to spread this inspired piece of filmmaking as far and wide as I could. We praise and champion a lot of small films here at Cinematical (and hopefully turn you folks on to some great finds), but if I had to throw myself out there for one film this year, it would have to be Dear Zachary.

Since it's better to know as little as possible going into this particular doc, I've posted the synopsis after the jump (for those who want more details). Dear Zachary arrives in theaters on October 31st in New York and on November 7th in Los Angeles and Chicago, before expanding to other cities. Additionally, you'll be able to catch the entire doc when it airs on MSNBC this December 7th.

p.s. Also done up all Steampunk-y, artist Björn Hurri has created a number of images for characters like Chewbacca (pictured above), Yoda (pictured below in gallery), Luke Skywalker (who looks like a cross between a steel worker and a meth addict), Han Solo (if he was 63 and still going strong) and a badass Storm Trooper (who's working a little Predator action into his Steampunk suit). We've included a couple of the images for you to check out below, then head over here to see the rest.

In addition to the Steampunk images, scope out this print of Reservoir Troopers (via Scrawl Collective) -- which is obviously a play off that famous scene from Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. Awesome. Must have one. Part of this "experience" included a chat with Bond himself, Daniel Craig, and Quantum of Solace director Marc Forster. (You can read all about that over here.) Now, however, we're finally allowed to tell you about some of the activities that took place during our four days across the pond -- and how do I not start with the awesomeness that was driving an Aston Martin -- a car, mind you, that's worth more than my life -- at well over 100mph. But let me back up.

Never sit at the back of a bus for more than an hour and a half. By the time our small group of online writers arrived at the Millbrook test track, I felt like I was ready to puke. Millbrook is literally in the middle of the English countryside -- an hour or so out of London, in Bedfordshire, England -- and it's the sort of place that calls for an escort to be with you at all times. See, Millbrook is where they test all sorts of cars and military vehicles before they're called into action. Thus, cameras are everywhere, the public is not allowed in and security is tighter than a seat belt around Santa.

Gallery: The Aston Martin Experience

Continue reading Cinematical's James Bond Adventure: Driving the Aston Martin

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Come On -- Now Jessica Alba's Hannibal Lecter?!

Click image above to head straight to our freaky Alba hi-res gallery

I get what the Declare Yourself people are trying to do, and I admire it and support it. Voting is important, and way too many people are indifferent to the process. But don't these guys realize that special Jessica Alba photoshoots are old news? I mean, she already took on a bunch of iconic movie scenes, and Charlie Chaplin, and a previous Declare Yourself ad. The girl is addicted! I'm just waiting for the day that I get to share pics of her recreating scenes from '80s action heroes. She's done Chaplin, so why not Arnie, Jean-Claude, Steven, and the others?

But back to the picture -- now she's in a new ad which brings to mind a sexier Hannibal Lecter. In the wake of the others, this simply seems like more of the same, rather than a shocking image plastered up to make a statement and urge kids to vote. "Hey look, now she's doing Hannibal Lecter!"

Eh, I think they just got the idea from Erik (who compared her last, duck-taped stint with Silence of the Lambs). Directed by Gini Reticker, the buzz-worthy doc tells of a courageous group of Liberian woman who came together and stood up to those holding their country hostage in an attempt to bring peace back to the land.

The synopsis adds, "Thousands of women - ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim - came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they took on the warlords and nonviolently forced a resolution during the stalled peace talks. A story of sacrifice, unity and transcendence, Pray the Devil Back to Hell honors the strength and perseverance of the women of Liberia. Inspiring, uplifting, and most of all motivating, it is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations."

Pray the Devil Back to Hell opens in theaters (in NYC) on November 7.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Groovy Early Art from 'The Incredibles'

I wanted to call this a Fan Made post, and I suppose you can technically say artist Lou Romano is a "fan" of the designs he produces, but it's a weird line and so we're not attaching any labels. Romano, of course, is a member of the art department over at Pixar Studios, and over on his blog he's just thrown up a slew of early concept images for The Incredibles, Jack-Jack Attack and Mr. Incredible and Friends. Romano introduces the enormous set by saying they're "some other samples of Incredibles work I did between 2000-2004. Development/color styling/and dvd bonus materials." The image above (one of my personal favorites), he calls "more of a gag drawing."

The Incredibles happens to be right up there with my favorites of Pixar -- and with the popularity of superhero movies and the popularity of The Incredibles, I'm real surprised Pixar isn't looking to make a sequel -- and, instead, is churning out a Cars 2 and a Toy Story 3. Bogus, I say! Check out a few of Romano's images in the gallery below, then head over to his page to see a ton more. Would you be down for an Incredibles sequel? Or are you happy with more Cars and Toy Story?

Gallery: Early Art for The Incredibles

[via Super Punch]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Exclusive: 'Bolt' Poster Premiere!

Filed under: Animation, Comedy, Disney, Fandom, Family Films, Movie Marketing, Images, Posters

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Disney's Bolt, which boasts a voice cast that includes John Travolta and some girl named Miley Cyrus (maybe you've heard of her; looks a little like that other girl Hannah Montana ...).
